Google Analytics addon adds tracking code for Google Analytics. This addon supports basic tracking code based on Universal Analytics and it supports various advanced features you can enable, including Custom Dimensions tracking.
To start using this addon, make sure you don’t have any other Google Analytics plugin installed and that you don’t add Analytics code into the page through the theme. Adding duplicated analytics code will lead to errors and invalid tracking statistics.
To use this addon, you need to setup your Google Analytics account (requires any Google/Gmail account). If you want to learn more about Google Analytics and how it works, including basic information about creating account and more, check out official Google Analytics Academy website. Once you create account, and add your website to it, you can begin with the setup of this addon.
Step 1: Add Tracking ID
Tracking ID is unique ID added to each property (your website) you have on your Google Analytics account. This image shows how the Admin area of Analytics looks like and where the Tracking ID is located.
Click on the marked option, and a new list of options will appear underneath. Click on Tracking Code option, and page will now look like this:
You need the ID marked with the red rectangle. Here you see masked code (with XXXX), but your code will have some numbers there. It is important to copy the whole tracking ID, including UA and dashes.
Step 2: Add tracking to plugin
Now that you have tracking ID, open GD Press Tools Pro Settings, and get to the Google Analytics settings. Enter the ID in the Tracking ID box (marked with red) and make sure Status checkbox is Enabled.
Step 3: Ignore User Roles
If you want to ignore some of the user roles from tracking, you can use Ignore Users options. Check all the user roles you don’t want to track, and plugin will not tracking code for these user roles when user is logged in. Usually, you will want to exclude Administrators from tracking, and leave all other roles active, and for that, you need to check only Administrator on this list.
Step 4: Advanced Settings and Plugins
Plugin has 4 more options you can use (and I usually enable 3 of them):
- Anonymize IP: each visitor will be tracked, but real IP will not be used.
- Force SSL: if your website only works through HTTPS, enable this option.
- Enhanced Link Attribution: track individual links on the page that lead to the same URL.
- Display Features: used for remarketing, demographics and interest reporting.
