Working with the plugin

Plugin adds two new custom taxonomies, one for prefixes and one for prefix groups.

Prefixes and Prefix Groups

While the plugin is based on use of prefixes, groups are very important as they are used to organize prefixes in logical groups, and also reuse prefixes in more than one group. Groups are assigned to individual forms, and for each forum you can add one or more groups, and when the prefixes are selected, you can pick only one prefix from each group.

Prefixes are assigned to topics, but that is done through prefix groups. One group can include one or more prefixes, and group is assigned to one or more forums. And the group limits selection of a prefix in the topic to only prefixes in the group.

Administration of prefixes and groups

To manage prefixes and groups, you can use dedicated panels, and you can edit or add new prefixes and groups. Main settings in the plugin are actually linked to groups.

To learn how you can add and edit prefixes and groups, assigned them to forums, check out dedicated user guide.

Using prefixes for support

One of the common uses of prefixes, is for the support forums. Dev4Press Forums are using 3 different groups to handle support topics, and many other websites do the same. Check out the tutorial for more information.

Integration with other plugins

GD Topic Prefix Pro for bbPress can integrate into other plugins, and you can learn more in the following tutorial.

Prefixes in the Forums on the Frontend

There are few aspects of having prefixes in the frontend. First, you have assignment of prefixes via topic or reply form, you have prefixes display in the topics lists (forums or views) and display of prefixes on the topic page.

Assign Prefixes to Topics

Based on the forum where the new topic is added, plugin will determine which prefix groups to show, and based on the group permissions, location in the topic form, the prefix selection will be displayed.

Default method to show prefix groups and prefixes is with the use of SELECT Dropdown controls. But, for each group you can change the selection to radio controls.

Basic prefix assignment is done when the topic is created. But, based on user permissions, user creating topic maybe doesn’t have the permission to do that, and prefix is either assigned to default group prefix, or is set to no prefix, and later moderators can edit topic to set prefix.

Prefix can be changed via topic edit. But, it can be changed from reply. Topic author, keymaster or moderator by default can change the topic prefix when they create new reply. Group permissions and rules control if this is possible or not.

Prefixes in the Topics lists

Any forum page showing list of topics can show prefixes for a topic. This includes forums, search results and topic views.

Prefixes are displayed using prefix colors and group display settings.

If you click on the prefix, parent forum topics will be filtered to show topics with selected prefix. This option can be disabled in global plugin settings.

Prefixes in the single Topic

When it comes to single topic page, things are not that simple, due to some limitations in how bbPress can generate single page.

The only sure way to show assigned topics, is the notice. Showing prefixes before the topic title is not always possible, and it is done using JavaScript, because topic title is outside of the bbPress topic template and depends on theme.
